Bessemer: Officials with the Bessemer Police Department are investigating a homicide that happened Tuesday afternoon. The Jefferson County Coroner's office has identified the victim as 66-year-old Gloria Harris Parrish. She was found dead in her home in the 2100 block of Fairfax Avenue.

Birmingham: A house fire in Birmingham sent two people to the hospital Saturday afternoon, fire officials say. Birmingham firefighters responded to a fire in the 3400 block of 31st Place North around 2:45 p.m. Crews rescued one person from the burning house. A second person managed to get out moments later.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a federal judge from Alabama who has never tried a case and was rated “not qualified” by the Bar Association.
Authorities say a series of fires damaged five structures and three teenagers have been charged. Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson told news outlets that authorities started receiving reports of fires Tuesday night. Johnson says the first reported fire happened at a vacant, single-family structure. That fire was followed by two more at other vacant structures. All three structures were damaged, but weren’t a total loss.
